I used a recipe was from the Stitch & Bitch book for this with eyelash yarn in tandem with something synthetic and inexpensive. It's held up pretty well over at the Noakes household, although the edges flattened out rather quickly. If I were doing it again, I'd actually put some stuffing into the circular outside so it would keep its shape.
